The Traditional Latin Mass
The Chartres Pilgrimage is strongly associated with the Traditional Latin Mass, also known as the Extraordinary Form or the Roman Rite. This is the version of the Mass which is celebrated every day along the pilgrimage.
If you have never heard of this form of the Mass, you can read more about it here, here and watch the documentary here. The short video below is also a good introduction.
Practical Resources
Booklets & Missals
Helpful for following the prayers and the order of Mass.
Find a Latin Mass
If you want to try a Sunday Mass before the pilgrimage.

Songs & hymns (good prep for Chartres)
We do a lot of singing on the pilgrimage, it helps keep us going! You can find a Spotify playlist with many of the hymns we sing here, it’s a good idea to listen to them a few times before the pilgrimage so they feel more familiar.
What to do at your first Latin Mass
- Don’t stress about following every response. Watch, learn, and join in as you can.
- For Holy Communion: only approach if you are Catholic, properly disposed, and in a state of grace.
- Dress modestly and respectfully, as you would for any Catholic Mass. (For men, this generally means no shorts or sleeveless shirts; for women, no shorts, sleeveless shirts, or low necklines. It’s also customary for women to cover their heads with a veil or scarf.)
